    Training vs Punishment

Distraction: We advocate distraction and verbal communication in lieu of punishment. You want your dog to obey you out of love, devotion and respect, NOT out of fear. Dogs have a very short attention span and often will not even link the punishment to the misdeed, so nothing will have been gained, but much will have been lost. If you pet knows that he gets punished by you, soon he won’t want to be around you and will tuck his tail and run away from you in fear.

Effective Communication: You need to understand the psychology of dogs inorder to understand how to communicate with them. First you need to get on their level. Although they are unable to speak our language, they can be taught to follow simple commands very successfully. Single syllable words are most effective.

Bad Habits: It is a lot easier to fix a problem before it becomes a habit. Once it is a habit, that habit has to be UNLEARNED and then the new behavior learned, so it is twice the work at that point. Don’t allow bad behavior to take root.

Biting: If your puppy is biting as a way of showing affection or in play, you need to put an end to this the moment it becomes painful or uncomfortable. You can do this through communication. Wait until your pup bites hard enough that it is uncomfortable and then let out a loud puppy yelp in pretend pain. It is especially effective if this scream sounds like a puppy in pain. This they can relate to! They have been there, done that and they know what a puppy cry means!

Jumping Up: If you take a large round bowl and face the opening toward your dog, they will not jump up. Use this as a training tool to stop them from this behaviour!

Potty Training: Your pup should not be confined to his crate during the day for extended periods of time of more than 3 hours. If you take the time to potty train your pup when you first get them, you will be free from this issue for the remainder of their lives. The easiest way to potty train a Siberian Husky requires you to devote 2 full days to the pup by sitting and watching television or several good movies with them on your lap. When they have to go potty they will try and get away from you to do the deed as they do not want to mess their living and play area. When you experience this behaviour, that is your queue to take them outside for a potty run.

Exercise to Avoid Behavioral Problems: Adequate exercise is the best deterent to behavioral problems, especially in your larger breeds. You want to make sure that your pup is fully inoculated against all canine diseases he may come in contact with prior to taking him on any walks or venturing out into any public areas such at Petsmart or Dog Parks. Also use caution if it is necessary to take your pup to the Veterinarian Office, because at least ½ of the animals are there because they are sick or infected with disease or parasites, while the other ½ are there for their regular health check-ups. You major concern is NOT the sick or infected animals but rather the warm and loving person or child who has the uncontrollable urge to go from one animal to the next, allowing each one to lick their hands and pet the animals, effectively passing all the germs and parasites from one animal to the next.

Consistency: Be consistent in your training. Pick your battles and then stick to your decisions. If it is not okay behavior on Monday, then it had better not be okay on Wednesday. And likewise, if you allow the behavior on Saturday, how can you then complain about the same behavior on Tuesday?

Social Manners: Train your dog to be socially acceptable so that other people will also love and adore your animal. This is the best gift that you can give your dog.
